Pronoun agreement means that a pronoun should correspond appropriately with its antecedent in relevant grammatical features such as number and person.

Number Agreement

A singular antecedent normally requires a singular pronoun:

The student forgot his or her book.

A plural antecedent requires a plural pronoun:

Modern English also widely uses singular they when the person’s gender is unknown, irrelevant, or intentionally unspecified:

Unnecessary shifts can make writing confusing:

A consistent version would be:

If a person wants to succeed, they must work hard.

Pronoun Reference

A pronoun should clearly identify the noun or noun phrase to which it refers.

Unclear:

When Ahmed spoke to Bilal, he was angry.

It is unclear whether he refers to Ahmed or Bilal.

Clearer:

Ahmed was angry when he spoke to Bilal.

Pronoun Agreement with Collective and Indefinite Expressions

Some nouns and expressions require careful interpretation:

The committee reached its decision.

Here the committee is viewed as a single body.

But when individual members are emphasized:

The committee disagreed among themselves.

The choice depends on meaning and context.

Pronoun Case

Pronouns also change form according to grammatical function:

She called me.
They invited us.

A frequent error is using a subject form where an object form is required:

❌ She gave the book to I.
✓ She gave the book to me.

In compound expressions, it can help to test the pronoun separately:

Ali and I went home.
The teacher spoke to Ali and me.
