Pashto – Literary Criticism – Major Approaches to Literary Criticism

Major Approaches to Literary Criticism

Introduction

Literary criticism is not limited to one method of reading. Different approaches ask different questions about a literary work. Some focus on language and structure, others examine the author’s historical circumstances, social conditions, psychological dimensions, cultural identity or relationship with other texts.

The choice of approach depends on the nature of the work and the question being investigated. A critic studying the metre and imagery of a Pashto ghazal may use a formal approach, while a researcher examining representations of war and displacement in a novel may use historical, sociological or postcolonial methods.

1. Formalism and Text-Centred Criticism

Formalism emphasizes the literary text itself. It examines structure, imagery, rhythm, diction, symbolism, narrative voice and the relationship between different parts of the work.

In Pashto poetry, a formal analysis may investigate the relationship between metre, rhyme, refrain and meaning. In prose, it may examine plot structure, characterization, dialogue and narrative technique.

This approach helps critics avoid reducing a literary work to the author’s biography or political opinions. However, exclusive attention to the text may overlook important historical and social contexts.

2. Historical Criticism

Historical criticism studies a literary work in relation to the period in which it was produced. It examines political events, social institutions, intellectual traditions, religious debates and literary conventions.

For example, the poetry of Khushhal Khan Khattak can be studied in relation to the political and cultural conditions of the Mughal period. Similarly, modern Pashto writing about conflict and migration can be examined in relation to the historical circumstances of the communities represented.

Historical interpretation requires reliable evidence. A critic should distinguish documented facts from later traditions, legends and personal assumptions.

3. Biographical Criticism

Biographical criticism examines the relationship between a writer’s life and literary work. Knowledge of a poet’s education, travels, relationships, political experiences and intellectual influences can help readers understand particular themes.

However, the writer and the literary speaker should not automatically be treated as the same person. A poem’s narrator may express an imagined position, and a fictional character is not necessarily a direct representation of the author.

4. Sociological and Marxist Criticism

Sociological criticism investigates how literature represents society, institutions, class relations, economic conditions, customs and power. Marxist criticism gives particular attention to class, labour, material conditions, ideology and the relationship between culture and economic structures.

These approaches can be useful for studying Pashto literature about poverty, land, labour, inequality, political authority and social reform. They help critics ask whose interests are represented, whose voices are absent and how social structures shape characters’ lives.

The critic should nevertheless avoid forcing every literary work into a predetermined political explanation.

5. Feminist and Gender Criticism

Feminist criticism examines the representation of women, gender roles, social power, voice, agency and inequality in literature. It also studies the contribution of women writers and the ways literary traditions have included or excluded their experiences.

In Pashto literature, this approach can be applied to folk poetry, landays, short stories, novels, memoirs and contemporary writing. It may examine how women express grief, love, resistance, social criticism and personal aspirations, as well as how male-authored texts represent women’s lives.

Gender criticism should consider historical and cultural context rather than impose simplistic assumptions on every text.

6. Psychological and Psychoanalytic Criticism

Psychological criticism explores the emotional and mental dimensions of characters and literary speakers. It may examine fear, memory, desire, trauma, conflict, identity and motivation.

Psychoanalytic criticism is a more specific tradition that draws on theories of the unconscious, repression and symbolic meaning. These approaches can help interpret complex characters and recurring images, but they should not be used to diagnose real authors or characters without adequate basis.

7. Structuralism and Post-Structuralism

Structuralism examines the systems of signs, patterns and relationships through which meaning is produced. It may investigate recurring narrative structures, oppositions, conventions and cultural codes.

Post-structuralist approaches question the idea that a text always has one fixed or final meaning. They examine ambiguity, contradiction, unstable language and the different interpretations that a text may support.

These approaches can be used to study recurring patterns in Pashto folk narratives, symbolic contrasts in poetry and the relationship between language and identity.

8. New Historicism

New Historicism studies literature alongside other forms of historical evidence, such as political documents, chronicles, letters, legal records, religious texts and social practices. It does not treat literature as completely separate from the world in which it was created.

This approach is particularly relevant to Pashto literary history. A poem, chronicle or narrative can be studied both as a literary work and as evidence of the debates, values and social relationships of its time. Khan Zaman Kakar has discussed the importance of New Historicism for strengthening Pashto literary criticism and connecting literary texts with wider historical contexts.

9. Postcolonial and Cultural Criticism

Postcolonial criticism examines the effects of colonial power, political domination, cultural representation, language policy and resistance. Cultural criticism studies how literature reflects and shapes collective identity, memory, tradition and social values.

These methods can be applied to Pashto writing about language, borders, political authority, migration, cultural marginalization and relations between local and global cultures.

They are also useful for studying the experiences of Pashto-speaking communities living outside their traditional regions.

10. Comparative Criticism

Comparative criticism studies literary works across languages, periods, genres and cultural traditions. It may examine translation, shared themes, literary influence, formal similarities and differences in cultural expression.

For example, a critic may compare Pashto ghazal traditions with Persian or Urdu poetry, or examine how a folk narrative is transformed into a modern short story. Comparison should be based on evidence and should recognize the independent creativity of each tradition.

Choosing and Combining Critical Approaches

No single method can answer every literary question. A study of a classical Pashto poem may combine formal analysis of metre and imagery with historical research into the poet’s period. A novel about migration may require sociological, psychological and postcolonial approaches.

A responsible critic should:

  • Identify the main research question.
  • Select a method suitable for the text and question.
  • Read the original work closely.
  • Use reliable historical and bibliographic evidence.
  • Explain the method and its limitations.
  • Avoid imposing a theory without demonstrating its relevance.

Conclusion

Major approaches to literary criticism provide different ways of understanding literary works. Formalism examines artistic structure; historical criticism studies context; sociological and feminist methods investigate social relations; psychological criticism explores inner experience; and comparative, postcolonial and New Historicist approaches connect literature with wider intellectual and cultural systems.

Pashto literary criticism can become more rigorous and diverse by using these approaches thoughtfully while remaining attentive to the language, traditions and historical experiences of Pashto literature.
