Pashto-English and Pashto-Urdu Translation
Introduction
Translation is the process of transferring meaning from one language into another while preserving the message, context, tone and intention of the original text. It is an important skill for education, literature, journalism, administration, business and communication among multilingual communities.
For Pashto speakers, translation between Pashto, English and Urdu has particular practical value. English is widely used in international education, science, technology and professional communication. Urdu serves as an important language of communication across Pakistan, including in government, media and education. Pashto remains a major language of cultural expression, literature and everyday communication in Pashtun communities.
Translation is not simply the replacement of individual words. A good translator must understand the subject, identify the intended meaning, recognise cultural references and produce a natural expression in the target language.
1. Understanding the Translation Process
Translation normally involves three basic stages:
Understanding the source text: The translator reads the original carefully and identifies its meaning, subject, tone and purpose.
Transferring the meaning: The translator finds suitable expressions in the target language without changing the intended message.
Reviewing the translation: The translated text is checked for accuracy, grammar, fluency, consistency and cultural appropriateness.
For example:
Pashto: زه پښتو زده کوم.
English: I am learning Pashto.
Urdu: میں پشتو سیکھ رہا ہوں۔
The English and Urdu sentences communicate the same basic meaning, although Urdu may require gender agreement in the speaker’s expression.
2. Translation Between Pashto and English
Translation between Pashto and English can be challenging because the two languages differ in sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
Sentence structure
Pashto generally follows a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order in ordinary declarative sentences.
Example:
- Pashto: زه کتاب لولم.
- English: I read a book.
The English sentence normally places the verb before the object, whereas the Pashto sentence places the verb at the end.
Another example:
- Pashto: احمد ښوونځي ته ځي.
- English: Ahmad goes to school.
A translator should understand the grammatical structure rather than translate each word in its original position.
Gender and grammatical agreement
Pashto nouns and related grammatical forms may show gender distinctions. English generally does not mark grammatical gender in the same way.
For example:
- هغه زده کوونکی دی. — He is a student.
- هغه زده کوونکې ده. — She is a student.
The English word “student” does not change according to the student’s gender, but the Pashto sentence reflects the distinction.
Idiomatic expressions
Idioms should be translated according to their intended meaning rather than their literal wording.
For example:
- Pashto: زړه مې خوشحاله شو.
- Natural English: I felt happy.
- Literal meaning: My heart became happy.
The natural translation is more appropriate in ordinary English communication.
3. Translation Between Pashto and Urdu
Pashto and Urdu have different linguistic origins and grammatical structures, although both contain vocabulary influenced by Persian and Arabic. Their speakers may share many cultural references, but this does not mean that their sentences can be translated word for word.
Examples:
| Pashto | Urdu | English |
|---|---|---|
| زه ښه یم. | میں ٹھیک ہوں۔ | I am fine. |
| تاسو چېرته ځئ؟ | آپ کہاں جا رہے ہیں؟ | Where are you going? |
| زه اوبه غواړم. | مجھے پانی چاہیے۔ | I want water. |
| هغه کتاب لولي. | وہ کتاب پڑھتا/پڑھتی ہے۔ | He/she reads a book. |
| موږ کار کوو. | ہم کام کرتے ہیں۔ | We work. |
Urdu has grammatical features that differ from Pashto. Translators must pay attention to gender, number, politeness and verb agreement.
4. Common Translation Challenges
Word-for-word translation
One of the most common mistakes is translating every word separately without considering the meaning of the complete sentence.
A literal translation may sound unnatural or even communicate the wrong message.
Cultural expressions
Some expressions are closely connected to Pashtun traditions, social relationships and cultural values. Words such as melmastia (hospitality), nanawatai (seeking refuge or protection) and hujra (a traditional communal space) may require explanation rather than a single-word translation.
The translator should decide whether to retain the original term, provide an explanatory translation or use a combination of both.
Multiple meanings
A word may have several meanings depending on its context. The translator must identify which meaning is intended.
Dialect differences
A word used in one Pashto-speaking region may be unfamiliar or carry a different meaning in another region. Translators should consider the intended readership and the variety of Pashto used in the source text.
Tone and register
An official letter, a literary poem, a casual conversation and a legal document require different styles. The translator must preserve the appropriate level of formality.
5. Translating Different Types of Texts
Everyday conversation
Conversational translation should be natural, simple and easy to understand.
Example:
- Pashto: مهرباني وکړئ، لږ انتظار وکړئ.
- English: Please wait a moment.
- Urdu: براہِ کرم، تھوڑی دیر انتظار کریں۔
Official and administrative documents
Official translation requires precision, consistency and appropriate terminology. Government notifications, office orders, reports and regulations should retain their original legal or administrative meaning.
For example:
- Pashto: د غونډې پرېکړې به د ټولو ګډونوالو سره شریکې شي.
- English: The decisions of the meeting will be shared with all participants.
- Urdu: اجلاس کے فیصلے تمام شرکاء کے ساتھ شیئر کیے جائیں گے۔
For legally binding documents, the translator should avoid changing the scope, authority or obligations expressed in the original.
Literary translation
Literary translation requires sensitivity to imagery, rhythm, symbolism, emotion and cultural references. Poetry may not be translatable through literal wording alone. The translator should try to preserve the central idea and artistic effect, while recognising that some features of the original may not transfer completely.
Educational and academic texts
Academic translation should preserve technical terminology, definitions, arguments and references. Where a technical term has no widely accepted equivalent, the translator may retain the original term and explain it.
6. A Practical Translation Method
Learners can follow a systematic method:
- Read the complete source text before translating.
- Identify the subject and purpose.
- Mark unfamiliar words and expressions.
- Consult reliable dictionaries and specialist references.
- Translate the meaning rather than individual words.
- Preserve the original tone and level of formality.
- Read the translated text independently.
- Compare it with the source to identify omissions or changes.
- Ask a competent speaker to review difficult passages.
A particularly useful technique is back-translation. After translating a passage into another language, translate it back into the original language and compare the meaning. This can reveal misunderstandings, although it does not replace expert review.
7. Using Dictionaries and Digital Translation Tools
Dictionaries are essential for checking meanings, pronunciation, spelling and usage. Learners should use reliable Pashto-English and Pashto-Urdu dictionaries, especially those prepared by recognised academic institutions.
Digital translation tools can help with initial drafts, vocabulary and alternative expressions. However, automatic translation may struggle with:
- Regional vocabulary.
- Idioms and proverbs.
- Poetry and figurative language.
- Historical and cultural references.
- Complex official or legal terminology.
Machine-generated translations should therefore be reviewed by a competent human translator, particularly when accuracy has legal, academic or professional consequences.
8. Exercises for Translation Practice

I am learning Pashto.
I read a book.
په انګلیسي کې فعل عموماً د مفعول څخه مخکې راځي، خو په پښتو کې فعل د جملې په پای کې راځي.
بله بېلګه:
- پښتو: احمد ښوونځي ته ځي.
- انګلیسي: Ahmad goes to school.
ژباړونکی باید د دواړو ژبو ګرامري جوړښت درک کړي، نه دا چې یوازې کلمې د اصلي ترتیب له مخې واړوي.
جنسیت او ګرامري مطابقت
په پښتو کې د نومونو او اړوندو ګرامري بڼو ترمنځ د جنسیت توپیر څرګندېدای شي. انګلیسي د ګرامري جنسیت دا ډول څرګندونه نه لري.
بېلګې:
- هغه زده کوونکی دی. — He is a student.
- هغه زده کوونکې ده. — She is a student.
په انګلیسي کې د زده کوونکي لپاره د جنسیت له مخې د student کلمه نه بدلېږي، خو په پښتو کې د جملې بڼه د جنسیت توپیر څرګندوي.
اصطلاحي څرګندونې
اصطلاحات باید د خپلې موخې او مفهوم له مخې وژباړل شي، نه یوازې د لفظي مانا له مخې.
بېلګه:
- پښتو: زړه مې خوشحاله شو.
- طبیعي انګلیسي: I felt happy.
- لفظي مانا: My heart became happy.
| Where are you going? |
| زه اوبه غواړم. | مجھے پانی چاہیے۔ | I want water. |
| هغه کتاب لولي. | وہ کتاب پڑھتا/پڑھتی ہے۔ | He/she reads a book. |
Please wait a moment.
The decisions of the meeting will be shared with all participants.
۸. د ژباړې تمرینونه
