Pashto – Pashto within the Iranian and Indo-European Language Families

Pashto within the Iranian and Indo-European Language Families

English Section

1. Introduction

Understanding the place of Pashto within the world’s language families helps explain its relationship with Persian, Dari, Balochi, Kurdish and many other languages. It also clarifies a common misconception: geographical proximity, shared vocabulary or religious influence does not necessarily mean that two languages belong to the same linguistic branch.

Pashto is an Indo-European language, specifically an Eastern Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch. Its classification is based on comparative linguistics, which studies systematic similarities and differences among languages to reconstruct their historical relationships.

2. What Is a Language Family?

A language family is a group of languages that developed from a common ancestral language. Linguists identify language families by comparing vocabulary, sound changes, grammatical structures and other linguistic features.

For example, English, Persian, Pashto and Hindi are all members of the Indo-European family, but they belong to different branches within that family. Their shared ancestry does not mean that they are mutually intelligible or that they developed in the same geographical region.

A language family is therefore a historical and linguistic classification, not simply a geographical or cultural grouping.

3. The Indo-European Language Family

The Indo-European language family includes many languages spoken across Europe and parts of Asia. Its branches include Germanic, Romance, Slavic, Celtic, Greek, Albanian, Armenian, Indo-Iranian and several other groups.

English belongs to the Germanic branch. Spanish belongs to the Romance branch. Hindi belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-Iranian. Persian and Pashto belong to the Iranian branch of Indo-Iranian.

These languages share features inherited from an ancient common ancestor, conventionally called Proto-Indo-European. That ancestral language is reconstructed by historical linguists rather than known from a complete surviving written record.

4. The Indo-Iranian Branch

Indo-Iranian is one of the major branches of Indo-European. It is commonly divided into three broad groupings:

  • Indo-Aryan languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Punjabi.

  • Iranian languages, including Pashto, Persian, Dari, Balochi and Kurdish.

  • Nuristani languages, a group spoken mainly in parts of eastern Afghanistan and neighbouring areas of Pakistan.

The exact classification of individual languages and subgroups can involve scholarly debate, but the distinction between Indo-Aryan and Iranian is well established.

Pashto and Hindi therefore share a more distant Indo-European ancestry, while Pashto and Persian belong to the same Iranian branch. This does not make Pashto a dialect of Persian or Hindi.

5. The Iranian Languages

The Iranian languages are generally divided into historical and modern groupings. Ancient Iranian languages include Avestan and Old Persian. Middle Iranian languages include Middle Persian and Parthian. Modern Iranian languages include Persian, Pashto, Balochi, Kurdish, Ossetian and several other languages.

Pashto is classified as an Eastern Iranian language. Persian, including its major varieties such as Iranian Persian and Dari, is generally classified as Western Iranian.

The terms Eastern and Western are linguistic classifications. They do not simply refer to the current geographical location of every speaker. Historical language groups can spread, migrate and overlap.

6. Pashto and Persian

Pashto and Persian are related because both belong to the Iranian branch. They share some inherited vocabulary and have influenced each other through long periods of contact. Persian has also played a major role in literature, administration and education in many regions where Pashto is spoken.

However, Pashto and Persian are distinct languages. They differ in pronunciation, core vocabulary, grammatical patterns and parts of their verb systems. Their writing systems are related because both use forms of the Perso-Arabic script, but similarities in script do not make their spoken structures identical.

Persian has contributed vocabulary to Pashto, while Pashto has retained many features that distinguish it from Persian. The relationship is best understood as one of historical kinship and sustained contact, not linguistic identity.

7. Pashto and Other Iranian Languages

Pashto shares historical connections with Balochi, Kurdish, Ossetian and other Iranian languages. These relationships are established through systematic linguistic comparison rather than the similarity of a few words.

The Iranian languages have developed along different historical paths. Some have been heavily influenced by neighbouring languages, while others have retained or developed distinctive grammatical and phonological features.

Pashto has characteristics that distinguish it within the Iranian family, including its sound system and particular grammatical structures. These features are important for understanding its historical development and its position within Iranian linguistics.

8. Pashto and Indo-Aryan Languages

Pashto has been in contact with Indo-Aryan languages for centuries. In Pakistan, many Pashto speakers live alongside speakers of Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi and other languages. In Afghanistan, Pashto speakers interact with Dari and other languages.

Such contact can result in borrowing, bilingualism, changes in pronunciation and the adoption of expressions. Pashto also contains words of different historical origins, including borrowings from Arabic, Persian, Turkic and South Asian languages.

Borrowed vocabulary does not change a language’s basic genealogical classification. English, for example, contains many words from French and Latin but remains a Germanic language. Similarly, Pashto remains Iranian despite borrowing words from neighbouring languages.

9. Linguistic Evidence and Language Classification

Historical linguists use several types of evidence to classify languages:

  • Sound correspondences: regular patterns in how sounds differ across related languages.

  • Shared basic vocabulary: words for common concepts that may preserve evidence of common ancestry.

  • Grammatical similarities: comparable structures in pronouns, verbs, inflection and syntax.

  • Historical records: manuscripts, inscriptions and descriptions of earlier forms.

  • Reconstruction: the scientific process of inferring ancestral forms from related languages.

No single borrowed word or cultural similarity is sufficient to prove that two languages share a recent common ancestor. Reliable classification depends on systematic evidence across many linguistic features.

10. Why This Classification Matters

The classification of Pashto helps scholars reconstruct its historical development, compare it with other Iranian languages and understand its distinctive features. It also supports the preparation of grammars, dictionaries, educational materials and language technologies.

For students, the key point is to distinguish language family, branch, dialect and script. A language’s family describes its historical linguistic ancestry. A dialect is a variety of a language or a closely related linguistic system. A script is a system used to represent language in writing.

Pashto’s classification as an Eastern Iranian language is a linguistic conclusion based on comparative evidence. It should not be confused with political borders, ethnic origin stories or the language’s religious and cultural influences.
