Origin, History and Development of Pashto
English Section
1. Introduction
Pashto is one of the major languages of the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It is spoken primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan, particularly in regions historically associated with Pashtun communities. Pashto is also spoken by diaspora communities in the Middle East, Europe, North America and other parts of the world.
Pashto is not merely a means of communication. It is a vehicle of history, oral tradition, poetry, philosophy, social values and cultural identity. Its vocabulary, grammatical structure, dialects and literary heritage reflect centuries of interaction among the peoples of Central Asia, Afghanistan and South Asia.
The history of Pashto must be studied through two related but distinct perspectives: the historical development of the spoken language and the documented development of its written literature. A language may exist and evolve for centuries before surviving written records provide sufficient evidence to reconstruct its history.
2. Linguistic Origins of Pashto
Pashto belongs to the Indo-European language family, one of the world’s largest language families. Within this family, it belongs to the Indo-Iranian branch and, more specifically, the Iranian branch.
Its broad classification is:
-
Indo-European
-
Indo-Iranian
-
Iranian
-
Eastern Iranian
-
Pashto
This classification is based on systematic similarities in vocabulary, sound patterns and grammatical structures. Pashto shares historical linguistic features with other Iranian languages, although it has developed its own distinctive characteristics.
The exact historical pathway through which Pashto emerged is not completely documented. Scholars have proposed different explanations for the development of its ancestors and their geographical distribution. It is therefore more accurate to discuss Pashto as a language that developed through a long historical process than to assign it a precise date of origin.
3. Ancient Roots and Historical Development
The ancestors of Pashto developed within the broader historical environment of the Iranian languages. Over many centuries, languages in this region changed in response to migration, settlement, political transformation, trade and contact with neighbouring populations.
Pashto preserves linguistic features that distinguish it from Persian and other Iranian languages. Its phonology, vocabulary and grammatical structures provide evidence of a distinctive developmental history.
The ancient history of Pashto cannot be reconstructed solely from modern tribal genealogies or traditional accounts of ethnic origins. Linguistic history and ethnic history are related, but they are not identical. The history of a language is established primarily through linguistic comparison, written evidence and historical research.
Although Pashtun oral traditions associate the language with a deep past, the limited availability of early written evidence makes it difficult to establish a precise chronology for its earliest stages.
4. Pashto Before the Age of Surviving Manuscripts
For much of its early history, Pashto was transmitted through speech, family traditions, folk poetry, songs, stories and other forms of oral expression.
Oral transmission played a major role in preserving collective memory. Stories about ancestors, heroic figures, conflicts, migration, hospitality, honour and social relationships were passed from one generation to another. Folk poetry, particularly short lyrical forms, became an important means of expressing emotions and recording everyday experiences.
The absence of extensive early manuscripts does not mean that the language lacked complexity or that its speakers had no literary culture. It means that the surviving written evidence is insufficient to reconstruct every stage of its early development with certainty.
Researchers must therefore distinguish between traditions that are culturally important and claims that can be independently verified through surviving historical evidence.
5. Early Written Pashto Literature
The documented history of Pashto literature becomes substantially clearer during the sixteenth century.
One of the most important early figures is Bayazid Ansari, widely known as Pir Roshan, who lived approximately from 1525 to 1579. His work Khair-ul-Bayan is a landmark in the history of Pashto writing and is associated with the development of an adapted writing system for representing Pashto sounds.
The surviving manuscript tradition associated with this work provides important evidence for the development of Pashto literary expression and orthography.
Another major figure in early Pashto prose was Akhund Darweza, whose Makhzan-ul-Islam is generally associated with the early seventeenth century. Such works demonstrate the growing use of Pashto for religious, intellectual and literary purposes.
Claims about much earlier Pashto literary figures and texts also exist. For example, Pata Khazana, a collection attributed to the eighteenth century, presents works supposedly belonging to much earlier poets. However, its authenticity and the historical claims associated with it have been disputed by scholars. These claims should therefore be discussed with appropriate caution rather than treated as conclusively established facts.
6. The Classical Literary Period
The seventeenth century witnessed major developments in Pashto poetry and literary expression.
Khushal Khan Khattak emerged as one of the most influential figures in Pashto literature. His writings covered subjects such as ethics, leadership, honour, warfare, political affairs, personal experience and social life.
Rahman Baba became renowned for poetry concerned with spirituality, humility, love, morality and the inner life of human beings. His work remains an important part of Pashto’s literary and cultural heritage.
Other poets and writers contributed to the development of Pashto literary forms, themes and vocabulary. Pashto poetry drew upon regional oral traditions while also engaging with literary conventions shared across Persianate and Islamic intellectual environments.
The classical period helped establish Pashto as a language capable of sustained philosophical reflection, sophisticated poetry and extensive literary composition.
7. Development During the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Pashto continued to develop through poetry, religious writing, historical narratives, oral traditions and prose.
The rise of the Durrani state in the eighteenth century added a new political dimension to Pashto’s cultural history. Ahmad Shah Durrani, traditionally regarded as the founder of the Durrani Empire, is also remembered for his association with Pashto poetry.
Political changes, shifting centres of power and contact with Persian, Urdu and other regional languages influenced literary production. Pashto remained rooted in its own linguistic traditions while incorporating vocabulary and literary practices through long-term cultural interaction.
The growth of printed publications and more systematic linguistic study in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries eventually created new opportunities for documentation, education and standardisation.
8. Pashto in the Modern Period
The modern period brought significant changes in education, publishing, journalism, language planning and literary criticism.
Literary institutions, schools, newspapers, magazines, dictionaries and grammar books contributed to the formal study and wider dissemination of Pashto. Language academies and university departments supported research, teaching and the development of terminology.
Pashto literature expanded beyond classical poetry to include short stories, novels, drama, essays, biography, autobiography and modern poetry. Writers increasingly addressed questions of social change, political identity, education, conflict, gender, migration and human experience.
Radio, television and later digital media broadened the reach of spoken and written Pashto. Digital publishing has also made it easier to share Pashto literature, educational resources and language-learning materials across geographical boundaries.
9. Pashto in Afghanistan and Pakistan
Pashto is spoken on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The political boundary does not correspond to the full geographical distribution of the language or the historical connections among Pashto-speaking communities.
In Afghanistan, Pashto has a significant place in public life, education, literature and national cultural institutions. In Pakistan, it is widely spoken in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Balochistan and other areas with Pashtun populations. It is also used by communities living elsewhere in Pakistan and abroad.
Different institutional, educational and publishing environments have influenced the development of written standards and vocabulary. Despite regional differences, speakers share a substantial linguistic and literary heritage.
10. Challenges and Future Prospects
Pashto faces challenges common to many major regional languages. These include differences in spelling conventions, uneven access to educational resources, the need for technical terminology, and the limited availability of high-quality digital content in some fields.
At the same time, digital publishing, online education, electronic dictionaries, language-processing tools and social media create opportunities for wider use and preservation.
The future development of Pashto depends on sustained investment in literacy, teaching, research, publishing and digital resources. Preserving dialectal diversity while improving access to mutually intelligible written materials is an important part of this process.
Conclusion
Pashto is an Eastern Iranian language with a long history of oral transmission and a substantial literary tradition documented especially from the sixteenth century onward. Its development reflects linguistic continuity, regional interaction, literary creativity and changing social conditions.
A sound understanding of Pashto requires distinguishing established linguistic classification from uncertain historical claims, and oral heritage from independently verified written evidence. Its continuing use in literature, education, public life and digital communication demonstrates its enduring cultural importance.
