Pashto Nouns, Pronouns, Gender, Number and Case

English Section

Introduction

Nouns and pronouns are fundamental parts of Pashto grammar. Nouns identify people, places, objects, and ideas, while pronouns refer to participants or things without always repeating their names. Gender, number, and case help express grammatical relationships and can influence the forms of words used in a sentence.

Understanding these categories is essential for accurate Pashto speaking, writing, translation, and reading.

1. Pashto Nouns

A noun is a word used to name a person, place, object, substance, institution, or abstract concept.

Examples include:

  • سړی — man or person

  • ښځه — woman

  • کتاب — book

  • کور — house

  • ښار — city

  • ملګرتیا — friendship

Nouns may be classified semantically as proper or common, concrete or abstract, and countable or mass nouns. These categories describe different aspects of nouns and can overlap.

Proper nouns identify particular people or places, such as a person’s name or a city’s name. Common nouns refer to general categories, such as کتاب (book).

Concrete nouns refer to things that can be perceived through the senses, while abstract nouns refer to ideas, qualities, states, or relationships.

2. Gender in Pashto

Pashto has grammatical gender, particularly masculine and feminine distinctions in nouns and related grammatical forms.

Examples:

  • سړی — masculine

  • ښځه — feminine

  • ورور — brother

  • خور — sister

Gender can influence agreement and the forms of certain words. However, grammatical gender should not always be confused with biological sex: it is a grammatical category that determines how words behave in a language.

Learners should learn the gender of nouns alongside their vocabulary entries and observe how adjectives, pronouns, and verbs behave in relevant constructions.

3. Singular and Plural

Number distinguishes one entity from more than one. Pashto nouns may have singular and plural forms, but plural formation is not governed by one universal ending.

Examples:

  • کتاب — book

  • کتابونه — books

  • ښځه — woman

  • ښځې — women

  • سړی — man

  • سړي — men

These examples illustrate common patterns, not a rule that applies identically to every noun. Some nouns have irregular or less predictable plural forms, and usage may vary according to the word and dialect.

Plural forms should therefore be learned with the singular forms rather than created by applying a single suffix mechanically.

4. Pronouns in Pashto

Pronouns refer to people, objects, or ideas. They help avoid unnecessary repetition and show relationships among participants in a sentence.

Personal pronouns

Common independent personal pronouns include:

Pashto English
زه I
ته You, singular informal
تاسو You, plural or polite singular
دی He / it, masculine
دا She / this, depending on context
موږ We
دوی They

The precise interpretation of some forms depends on context, grammatical role, and dialect. For example, دا can function as a demonstrative meaning “this” and may also be used as a feminine third-person form.

Possessive and demonstrative forms

Possessive expressions show ownership or association, while demonstratives identify or point to people and things. Pashto can express these meanings through pronouns, modifiers, and other grammatical constructions.

Reflexive and other pronoun functions

Reflexive expressions refer back to a participant in the sentence. Interrogative and relative forms help ask questions or connect clauses. Their forms and uses should be studied within complete sentence patterns.

5. Grammatical Case

Case describes how a noun or pronoun relates grammatically to other elements in a sentence. It can be indicated through word forms, pronoun forms, postpositions, or the construction as a whole.

In Pashto, grammatical relationships are not expressed through case endings alone. Word order, postpositions, verb forms, and the type of clause also matter.

The distinction between direct and oblique forms is especially useful when studying Pashto nouns and pronouns. Certain grammatical environments require an oblique form rather than the direct form, although the exact pattern depends on the construction.

6. Oblique Forms and Postpositions

Pashto uses postpositions and other relational elements that follow the relevant noun phrase. In such constructions, nouns and pronouns may take forms associated with the grammatical relationship being expressed.

Pronouns often show distinctions between independent forms and forms used in particular grammatical environments. These distinctions are important in possessive constructions, expressions of location, and certain verb patterns.

Learners should study nouns and pronouns in example sentences rather than memorizing isolated forms without context.

7. Agreement with Nouns and Pronouns

Gender and number may influence agreement with other words in a sentence. Depending on the construction, verbs and other elements can show grammatical features associated with the relevant noun or pronoun.

However, Pashto agreement is not always a simple matter of making the verb match the subject. Some verb constructions, particularly certain past-tense transitive patterns, involve more complex relationships.

For this reason, agreement should be learned through common sentence patterns and careful comparison of examples.

8. Common Learning Difficulties

Learners often struggle with noun gender, irregular plurals, pronoun selection, and the difference between direct and oblique forms. They may also transfer grammatical patterns from Urdu, English, or another familiar language into Pashto, even when the structures differ.

A practical method is to learn each noun with its gender and plural, each pronoun with its grammatical uses, and each new case pattern in a complete sentence.

Conclusion

Pashto nouns and pronouns form the basis of reference in a sentence. Gender, number, and case contribute to grammatical meaning and influence the relationships between words. Mastering these categories through examples, reading, and regular sentence practice improves accuracy and helps learners understand more complex Pashto constructions.

زه I
ته You, singular informal
تاسو You, plural or polite singular
دی He / it, masculine
دا She / this, depending on context
موږ We
دوی They
