Pashto – Pashto Verbs, Tenses, Aspect and Agreement

Pashto Verbs, Tenses, Aspect and Agreement

English Section

Introduction

Verbs are among the most important elements of Pashto grammar. They express actions, events, states, and processes, and they help establish the relationship between the participants in a sentence.

Pashto verbs can vary according to tense, aspect, person, number, mood, and grammatical construction. Some forms are also affected by gender or agreement patterns. Understanding these features is essential for expressing time, completing sentences correctly, and interpreting both everyday speech and literary texts.

1. What Is a Verb?

A verb expresses an action, event, state, or process.

Examples include:

  • کول — to do

  • تلل — to go

  • راتلل — to come

  • خوړل — to eat

  • لیکل — to write

  • لوستل — to read

  • لیدل — to see

Verbs may be used independently in finite forms or appear in non-finite forms such as infinitives and participles. The precise form depends on the grammatical construction.

2. Verb Stems and Conjugation

Conjugation is the process by which a verb changes form to express grammatical information. Pashto verbs have patterns that learners must recognize, including differences between forms used for present-related meanings and forms used in past constructions.

Not every verb follows exactly the same pattern. Some verbs have irregular forms, and compound verbs may combine a noun, adjective, or other element with a verbal component.

For effective learning, students should study verbs through complete paradigms and example sentences rather than memorizing a single dictionary form.

3. Tense: Present, Past, and Future

Tense relates the time of an event to the time of speaking or another reference point.

Present

Present-related forms may describe current activities, general truths, habits, or repeated events.

زه کتاب لولم.

I read a book / I am reading a book.

The most appropriate English translation depends on context because the mapping between Pashto and English forms is not always one-to-one.

Past

Past constructions describe events or states associated with an earlier time.

ما کتاب ولوست.

I read the book.

This example illustrates a past construction; the precise interpretation depends on context and the form of the verb.

Future

Future meaning can be expressed through appropriate verbal forms and constructions, often with the future marker به.

زه به سبا راشم.

I will come tomorrow.

The choice of form can depend on the type of verb, the intended meaning, and the surrounding sentence.

4. Aspect: How an Event Unfolds

Tense and aspect are related but different. Tense concerns temporal location, while aspect concerns how an event is viewed, such as whether it is ongoing, repeated, completed, or presented as a whole.

Pashto has an important distinction between imperfective and perfective verb forms.

Imperfective forms commonly present an action as ongoing, habitual, repeated, or otherwise viewed without emphasizing it as a complete whole.

Perfective forms commonly present an event as a bounded or complete whole.

These distinctions do not correspond mechanically to a single English tense. Translation depends on context, the verb, and the grammatical construction.

5. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

A transitive verb typically takes a direct object, while an intransitive verb does not require one.

For example:

احمد کتاب لولي.

Ahmad reads a book.

Here, کتاب is the object of the verb لولي.

ماشوم ویده شو.

The child fell asleep.

This sentence does not require a direct object.

Some verbs can be used in more than one pattern, and the classification may depend on the meaning and construction in which they appear.

6. Person and Number

Verbs may show grammatical information about person and number. Person distinguishes first person, second person, and third person. Number distinguishes singular and plural.

The relevant forms depend on the verb and construction. Learners should practise verbs with different subjects and objects, paying attention to the forms that occur in each context.

7. Gender and Agreement

Gender can influence certain agreement patterns in Pashto, particularly in constructions involving past-tense transitive verbs and their participants.

However, Pashto agreement cannot be described adequately by saying that every verb always agrees with its subject. In some past-tense transitive constructions, the grammatical relationship between the verb and the participants differs from the pattern found in many present-tense constructions.

This is an important feature for advanced learners. The safest approach is to study common verb constructions systematically and observe which participant controls agreement in each one.

8. Mood and Imperatives

Mood expresses the speaker’s attitude toward an event, such as whether it is presented as a statement, command, wish, or possibility.

Imperative forms are used for commands and requests.

Examples:

  • راشه! — Come!

  • کښېنه! — Sit down!

  • ولوله! — Read!

The form used may vary according to the person being addressed, the verb, and the degree of politeness or formality.

9. Negation and Questions

Verbs occur in negative and interrogative constructions as well as affirmative statements. Negation may use a negative particle or another construction-specific form. Questions may be formed through interrogative words, intonation, or grammatical patterns.

Learners should practise affirmative, negative, and interrogative versions of the same sentence to understand how the verb behaves in each form.

10. Compound Verbs

Compound verbs are common in Pashto. They combine a verbal component with another meaningful element, such as a noun or adjective.

A compound verb often expresses a meaning that cannot be understood simply by translating each component separately. Some compounds are idiomatic, so they should be learned as complete expressions.

11. Practical Methods for Learning Verbs

An effective verb-learning routine should include:

  1. recording the infinitive and basic meaning;

  2. learning the main present-related and past forms;

  3. studying perfective and imperfective patterns;

  4. practising different persons and numbers;

  5. creating affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences; and

  6. observing agreement in complete examples.

Reading stories, listening to natural speech, and translating short passages help learners understand how verb forms function in real contexts.

Conclusion

Pashto verbs express actions, events, states, and processes. Tense locates events in time, aspect presents the way events unfold, and agreement links grammatical forms within a sentence. Transitivity, person, number, mood, and negation also shape verb use. A systematic study of verbs through complete examples provides a strong foundation for fluent and accurate Pashto.

دا جمله د سیاق له مخې د “I read a book” یا “I am reading a book” معنا ورکولای شي.
