Coordination, Subordination and Complex Sentences
English combines clauses primarily through coordination and subordination. These relationships allow writers to connect ideas and express logical relationships between them.
Coordination
Coordination joins elements of equal grammatical status.
The most common coordinating conjunctions are:
for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
They are traditionally remembered through the acronym FANBOYS.
She studied hard, and she passed the examination.
He was tired, but he continued working.
Coordinating conjunctions can connect words, phrases, or clauses:
tea and coffee
in the morning or in the evening
She called me, but I did not answer.
Subordination
Subordination creates an unequal relationship between clauses. One clause becomes dependent on another.
I stayed home because it was raining.
The main clause is I stayed home, while because it was raining is subordinate.
Subordinating conjunctions include:
because, although, if, unless, when, while, since, before, after, whereas
Different subordinators express different logical relationships:
because → reason
although → contrast/concession
if → condition
when → time
so that → purpose
Complex Sentences
Complex sentences allow writers to show relationships between ideas rather than presenting every idea as an isolated statement.
Compare:
It was raining. We stayed home.
with:
We stayed home because it was raining.
The second version establishes a clear cause-and-effect relationship.
Coordination and Subordination Together
Advanced sentences can combine both:
Although it was raining, we went to the market, and we returned before sunset.
Here, the sentence contains subordination through although and coordination through and.
Sentence Complexity and Good Writing
Complexity does not automatically make writing better. Effective writing depends on choosing a structure that clearly expresses the intended relationship between ideas.
Too many short sentences can make writing feel disconnected:
The economy changed. Businesses reacted. Consumers reduced spending. The government introduced reforms.
Appropriate coordination and subordination can create greater coherence:
As the economy changed, businesses reacted and consumers reduced spending, while the government introduced reforms.
The goal of sentence structure is therefore not simply to create long sentences, but to create clear relationships among ideas.
Understanding coordination, subordination, phrases, clauses, and sentence patterns provides the foundation for advanced study of syntax, cohesion, punctuation, style, and effective writing.
