ISLAMIC HISTORY AND CULTURE, PAPER – I
Time Allowed: 3 Hours Maximum Marks: 100
NOTE: Attempt Five questions in all including question No 1, which is COMPULSORY. All questions carry equal marks.
1 Read the following statements carefully and write down the correct answers in your answer-book
(i) Ibn Battuta visited India during the reign of Jahangir/Muhammud Tughlug/Alaud-Din Khilji/did not visit India at all.
(ii) Tigris is a river in Greece/Spain/lraq/North Africa
(iii) Al-ldrisi was a philosopher/muhaddith/physician/ geographer

(ix) Arrange chronologically: Al-Ghazali, Abd al-Qadir al- Jilani, Imad al Din Zangi, Nasir al-Din Tusi.
(x) The Battle of Hallin (Hillin) was fought between Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Muawiyah/Harun al-Rashid and the Byzantines/Abd al- Rahman and Charles Martel/Salah’al-Din Ayyubi and the Crusaders.
2 Give a brief but meaningtul sketch of the socio-political conditions prevailing in the Byzantine and the Sasanian empires on the advent of Islam. Bring out the significance of Islam as a new and revolutionary order in the context of these conditions.
3 Discuss the Islamic attitude to Science in the light of the Quran.
4 Write a note on the military policy of Hazrat Umar al-Faruq and his dispensation of the conquered lands.
5 Write a lucid note on the Muslim response to the onslaught of Greek philosophy and thought in the early history of Islam.
6 Write a brief notes on any two of the following: (i) Nur al-Din Mahmud (ii) Nizam al-Mulk iv) Abu Muslim al-Khurasani (iii) Al-Biruni (iv) Abu Muslim al-Khurasani
7 Discuss the progress of philosophy daring the Abbasid Caliphate with special reference to at least three most eminent philosophers of the period.
8 Attempt an intelligent analysis of the causes of the decline of Ottoman power, and how this great empire degenerated into the position of the sick man of Europe.
