Learning the Pashto Script and Pronunciation
Introduction
Learning the Pashto script and pronunciation is the first practical step towards reading, writing and speaking Pashto with confidence. Pashto uses a modified Arabic-based script written from right to left. It shares many letters with Arabic and Persian but also contains additional letters to represent sounds specific to Pashto.
For beginners, the most effective approach is to learn the letters systematically, understand how they connect, practise vowel sounds and gradually move from individual letters to words and sentences.
This article introduces the writing system, pronunciation principles and practical exercises for learners.
1. Direction and Structure of Pashto Writing
Pashto is written from right to left. Letters are generally joined together within a word, although some letters do not connect to the following letter.
The shape of a letter may change depending on its position:
- Isolated: the letter appears on its own.
- Initial: it appears at the beginning of a connected word.
- Medial: it appears in the middle.
- Final: it appears at the end.
For example, the letter ب can appear in different connected forms, depending on its position. Learners should become familiar with these forms through reading and handwriting practice.
2. The Pashto Alphabet
Pashto uses an Arabic-derived alphabet with additional letters. The following is a practical introductory sequence. Letter names and regional pronunciation may vary slightly.
| Letter | Approximate sound or description |
|---|---|
| ا | Long or supporting vowel carrier |
| ب | b |
| پ | p |
| ت | t |
| ټ | Retroflex t |
| ث | Usually s in common loanwords |
| ج | j |
| ځ | A distinctive Pashto consonant, often represented as dz or a related regional sound |
| چ | ch |
| څ | A distinctive Pashto consonant, with regional pronunciation |
| ح | Commonly h in modern pronunciation |
| خ | Kh, a voiceless velar or uvular fricative |
| د | d |
| ډ | Retroflex d |
| ذ | Usually z in common loanwords |
| ر | r |
| ړ | Retroflex or curled r |
| ز | z |
| ژ | Zh, as in the middle sound of “measure” |
| ږ | A distinctive Pashto sound, with dialect variation |
| س | s |
| ش | sh |
| ښ | A distinctive Pashto sound, with dialect variation |
| ص | Usually s in common loanwords |

| ع | A consonant in some Arabic-derived words; often weakened in everyday speech |
| غ | Gh, a voiced velar or uvular fricative |
| ف | f |
| ق | q, often realised differently by speakers |
| ک | k |
| ګ | g |
| ل | l |
| م | m |
| ن | n |
| ڼ | Retroflex n |
| و | w or a vowel, depending on the word |
| ه | h or a vowel-related form |
| ي | y or a long vowel, depending on the form |
| ې | A vowel letter, commonly associated with an e-like sound |
| ۍ | A feminine-ending form in many words |
| ئ | A form used in particular grammatical and verb endings |
| ء | Hamza, used in particular spelling contexts |
This table is an introductory guide, not a complete phonetic description. Some letters represent sounds that do not have exact equivalents in English.
3. Important Pashto Sounds
Several Pashto consonants require special attention because they are unfamiliar to many learners.
Retroflex consonants: ټ، ډ، ړ and ڼ are produced with the tongue curled slightly backwards. They should not be pronounced exactly like ordinary English t, d, r and n.
Fricative sounds: خ، غ، ژ، ښ and ږ include sounds that may require practice. خ and غ are produced towards the back of the mouth. ژ resembles the sound in the middle of the English word “measure.”
Distinctive Pashto consonants: ځ، څ، ښ and ږ are particularly important. Their exact pronunciation can differ among dialects. Learners should listen to reliable native speakers from the dialect they wish to learn.
4. Vowels and Pronunciation
Pashto has vowel distinctions that are not always represented by separate letters in ordinary writing. Short vowels may be indicated by diacritical marks in learning materials, but these marks are often omitted in normal texts.
Some important vowel-related letters include:
- ا: often represents or supports a long a-like vowel.
- و: may represent w or vowel sounds such as o and u, depending on the word.
- ي: may represent y or an i-like vowel.
- ې: commonly represents an e-like vowel.
- ۍ: occurs in particular feminine forms and endings.
The pronunciation of a word should be learned together with its meaning and grammatical form. Do not assume that every letter has one fixed English equivalent.
5. Short and Long Vowels
Like many languages, Pashto distinguishes vowel qualities and, in relevant contexts, vowel length.
Learners should practise listening to native speech rather than relying entirely on English spelling approximations. A useful method is to select a small group of common words, listen carefully, repeat them and then read them from their original Pashto script.
6. Letter Connections and Spelling
Most Pashto letters connect to neighbouring letters, but a group of letters does not connect to the letter immediately following it. These include ا، د، ډ، ذ، ر، ړ، ز، ژ، و and certain related forms.
This affects the visual shape of words. Beginners should practise writing complete words rather than memorising letters only in isolation.
Pashto spelling can also vary in informal digital communication. Learners should follow a consistent standard in educational and formal writing.
7. Practical Learning Method
A beginner can follow this sequence:
Stage 1: Recognise the letters
- Learn five to seven letters at a time.
- Identify their names and sounds.
- Write each letter several times.
Stage 2: Practise connected forms
- Write letters at the beginning, middle and end of words.
- Identify letters that do not connect to the following letter.
Stage 3: Learn vowel patterns
- Read words with ا، و، ي، ې and other vowel-related forms.
- Listen to the pronunciation of each word.
Stage 4: Read common words
Start with familiar words such as:
| Pashto | Meaning |
|---|---|
| سلام | Hello |
| کور | House |
| کتاب | Book |
| اوبه | Water |
| مور | Mother |
| پلار | Father |
| ورور | Brother |
| خور | Sister |
| ښوونځی | School |
| پښتو | Pashto |
Stage 5: Read short sentences
- زه زده کوونکی یم. — I am a student (male speaker).
- زه زده کوونکې یم. — I am a student (female speaker).
- دا کتاب دی. — This is a book.
- زه پښتو زده کوم. — I am learning Pashto.
8. Common Mistakes
Beginners commonly make the following mistakes:
- Reading Pashto from left to right instead of right to left.
- Confusing letters that look similar.
- Treating all Pashto consonants as exact equivalents of English sounds.
- Ignoring the difference between retroflex and ordinary consonants.
- Assuming that every vowel is clearly written in ordinary text.
- Memorising the alphabet without practising connected words.
- Depending entirely on Roman Pashto instead of learning the original script.
9. Daily Practice Exercise
A simple 20-minute routine can help beginners develop confidence:
- 5 minutes: revise letters and their sounds.
- 5 minutes: write five words.
- 5 minutes: read a short sentence aloud.
- 5 minutes: listen to a native speaker and repeat.
Consistency is more important than memorising a large number of letters in one sitting.
Conclusion
The Pashto script becomes easier when learners understand its direction, letter forms, connections and sound system. The additional Pashto letters and distinctive consonants deserve special attention. By combining handwriting, reading, listening and repetition, beginners can gradually develop the ability to read and pronounce Pashto accurately.
The goal is not simply to memorise an alphabet. It is to use the script as a practical tool for understanding the language, communicating with speakers and accessing Pashto literature and culture.

|---|---|
| سلام | سلام |
| کور | House |
| کتاب | Book |
| اوبه | Water |
| مور | Mother |
| پلار | Father |
| ورور | Brother |
| خور | Sister |
| ښوونځی | School |
| پښتو | Pashto |
