ISLAMIC HISTORY AND CULTURE, PAPER – I

NOTE: Attempt FIVE questions. Question No. 1 is Compulsory. All questions carry EQUAL marks.

1 Read the following statements carefully and write down the correct answers in your answer book:

(a) MANAT is a name of Mountain/Cave/ldol

(c) Hazrat Ibrahim/Hazrat Isaac/Hazrat Ismail was sacrificed by his father.

2 Umar b. Abdul Aziz is acknowledged as a Khalifa in the true sense of the word and is considered to be. the fifth and last of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (KHALIFA-i-RASHID). – How far do you agree with this statement! Explain the reasons for agreement or dis-agreement in the light of the actions taken by Umar bin Abdul Aziz.

The weaker is amongst you shall be as the stronger with me, until that I shall have redressed his wrong, and the stronger shall be the weaker, until I shall have taken from that which he hath wrested”. This is an extract taken from the maiden speech that delivered by Hazrat Abu Bakr, when he was elected as Khalifa. How far did he gained success in running the Government according to his speech? Explain with special reference to the incidents that took place during his regime.

4 The Treaty of HUDAIBIYYAH has been called CLEAR VICTORY (FATH-I-MUBEEN) by The Holy Quran. Justify this in the light of the incidents that took place after that Treaty.

5 Write a detailed note on the Battle of Badr, showing its causes and effects.

6 Discuss in detail that Islam was not spread by sword.

8 Select any one of the rulers of the Ottoman Caliphate and give his brief life- sketch, showing his achievements and contributions.

9 Write a detailed note on the development, in the fields of Arts and Sciences, during the period of Abbasid rules

10 Discuss that the Hijrat of the Holy Prophet (SAS) from Makkah to Madina was a turning point in the history of Islam.
