Concision and Economy of Expression
Concision means expressing an idea clearly and effectively without unnecessary words.
Good writing does not necessarily use fewer words at all times. It uses only the words that contribute meaning.
Compare:
Due to the fact that he was ill, he was unable to attend.
with:
Because he was ill, he could not attend.
The second version is shorter and equally clear.
Wordiness
Wordiness occurs when unnecessary words, phrases, or repetitions make communication longer without adding useful meaning.
Examples:
at this point in time → now
in the event that → if
due to the fact that → because
a large number of → many
completely finished → finished
Not every longer expression is wrong, but unnecessary length can reduce clarity.
Redundancy
Redundancy occurs when a sentence repeats information unnecessarily.
Examples:
return back
advance forward
basic fundamentals
past history
In many contexts, one element is sufficient:
return
advance
fundamentals
history
Empty Expressions
Some expressions add little information:
It is important to note that…
It should be mentioned that…
As a matter of fact…
These are not always wrong. They can be useful for emphasis or organization, but they should not become habitual fillers.
Concision Does Not Mean Extreme Brevity
A sentence should not be shortened if doing so removes necessary meaning.
For example:
The committee rejected the proposal because it was financially impractical.
should not be reduced to:
The committee rejected it.
The shorter sentence loses important information.
Economy in Professional Writing
Concision is especially valuable in:
- official correspondence
- reports
- academic writing
- business communication
- instructions
- presentations
- journalism
Readers should not have to work through unnecessary language to find the main point.
The Principle of Economy
A useful editing question is:
Does this word, phrase, or sentence add necessary meaning?
If the answer is no, consider removing or simplifying it.
Good concise writing is therefore not merely short. It is efficient, complete, and purposeful.
