Pashto – Folk Literature – Major Scholars and Collectors of Pashto Folklore

Major Scholars and Collectors of Pashto Folklore

Introduction

The preservation of Pashto folklore depends on both the communities that sustain oral traditions and the scholars who document, study, and interpret them. Folk songs, tapey, proverbs, tales, legends, and customary expressions have circulated through generations, often without a known author or a fixed written form. Researchers and collectors have helped preserve examples of this heritage in books, journals, recordings, and academic studies.

The history of folklore research is not the work of a single scholar or institution. It includes local storytellers, singers, teachers, writers, linguists, literary critics, ethnographers, and community collectors. Their contributions differ: some record oral material, others analyse its language and themes, and still others investigate its social and historical significance.

1. What Does Folklore Research Involve?

Folklore research involves more than collecting interesting stories or proverbs. It requires recording the original wording, understanding the context in which an expression is used, comparing variants, and explaining how a tradition is transmitted.

A responsible researcher asks who performs or tells a piece, where it circulates, when it is used, and what meanings listeners associate with it. The researcher also distinguishes oral material from later adaptations and separates documented information from speculation.

In Pashto studies, this work can involve folk poetry, including tappa or landay, folk songs, riddles, proverbs, oral narratives, customary practices, and regional linguistic forms.

2. Traditional Knowledge-Bearers

The first and most important contributors to folklore are the people who create, perform, remember, and transmit it. Singers, storytellers, elders, families, and community performers preserve forms that may never appear in a published collection.

Their knowledge can include local versions of stories, the appropriate occasion for a song, the meaning of an idiom, and the circumstances in which a proverb is used. These details may be lost if a researcher records only the words and ignores the performance.

A fair account of folklore scholarship should therefore recognize community contributors, not only the academics who later publish their material. Where consent and privacy permit, collectors should document the identity or chosen attribution of performers and acknowledge their contribution.

3. Professor Dawar Khan Daud

Professor Dawar Khan Daud is identified in Pashto literary scholarship as a significant figure in folklore research, criticism, translation, and literary journalism. A study by Zar Muhammad Sangar in the journal Pashto discusses his contribution to Pashto folklore and notes his broader linguistic and literary interests.

His work illustrates the importance of scholars who connect the collection of traditional material with wider literary research. Folklore requires both documentation and interpretation: researchers must preserve what people say while also considering language, genre, history, and social meaning.

Readers wishing to study Daud’s contribution should consult the published research and the relevant bibliographies rather than relying on unsourced lists of titles or claims about the size of his collection.

4. Salma Shaheen and the Documentation of Oral Poetry

Salma Shaheen is associated with Pashto literary scholarship and the documentation of oral poetic traditions. Recent research on women’s folk literature identifies her among scholars involved in collecting tapey circulating in Pashto-speaking communities.

The documentation of oral poetry is especially important because such poems may exist in multiple versions and often have no reliably identifiable individual author. A collection can preserve language and imagery that might otherwise disappear, while thematic analysis can illuminate the social experiences expressed through the poems.

Researchers should nevertheless distinguish the collector’s role from the original creation of a poem. The existence of a published version does not necessarily establish its first author, date of composition, or sole regional origin.

5. Sirajuddin Siraj and Thematic Collections of Tapey

Sirajuddin Siraj is cited in contemporary scholarship on Pashto tapey. His work, including a thematic collection of tapey, has been discussed in research examining women’s expression, labour, and oral literary traditions.

Thematic collections can help readers study recurring subjects, such as love, separation, work, family, migration, and social experience. They also make oral poetry more accessible to students and researchers who cannot readily gather material from multiple communities themselves.

However, thematic organization is an editorial choice. A poem may have several possible meanings, and placing it under one heading can emphasize some interpretations while obscuring others. Good scholarship explains how the material was selected and classified.

6. Makham Khattak and Regional Folklore Research

Makham Khattak is also named in recent research discussing collections of Pashto tapey. His inclusion illustrates the contribution of scholars and collectors who document oral material circulating across regional and community networks.

Regional research matters because Pashto oral traditions are not uniform. Pronunciation, vocabulary, performance style, and the preferred versions of a poem may differ between localities. A comprehensive account should preserve these variations rather than treating one collection as the definitive form of the tradition.

When assessing a particular collector’s work, readers should examine the publication itself, its editorial methods, the regions represented, and the source information provided for the collected material.

7. Literary Historians and Academic Institutions

Folklore scholarship also benefits from the wider work of Pashto literary historians, university departments, language academies, journals, libraries, and research centres. These institutions provide places to publish collections, compare manuscripts, conduct linguistic analysis, and preserve research for later generations.

Scholars such as Muhammad Sadiq Rohi and Abdul Hai Habibi are important names in the broader history of Pashto literary scholarship. Their historical and literary work provides context for understanding the development of Pashto writing, although a claim about a scholar’s specific contribution to folklore should be supported by the relevant book or study.

Academic journals are particularly useful because they allow readers to examine a research question, its evidence, and its references. Yet the existence of a published article does not make every conclusion definitive; sources, methods, and interpretations still require critical evaluation.

8. Methods Used by Folklore Researchers

Folklore researchers use several complementary methods:

  • Fieldwork and interviews: gathering material from performers and tradition-bearers.
  • Audio and video recording: preserving voice, melody, gesture, and performance context.
  • Transcription and translation: producing written versions while retaining the original Pashto.
  • Variant comparison: examining differences between versions collected in different places or periods.
  • Thematic analysis: studying subjects such as family, love, labour, identity, and resistance.
  • Historical comparison: checking oral accounts against manuscripts, archives, and other evidence where appropriate.
  • Ethical documentation: obtaining consent, protecting privacy, and acknowledging contributors.

No single method is sufficient for every type of folklore. A proverb may require linguistic and contextual analysis, while a song may need musical documentation as well as transcription.

9. Challenges in Preserving Pashto Folklore

Researchers face several challenges. Some traditions are performed less frequently as social conditions change. Older performers may pass away before their knowledge is recorded, while migration can separate communities from the places where particular forms developed.

Other difficulties include limited funding, inconsistent spelling, incomplete metadata, weak cataloguing, inaccessible publications, and the loss of performance details during transcription. Digital circulation can increase access but may also detach material from its original context or spread it without permission.

These problems call for cooperation between scholars, cultural institutions, schools, families, performers, and digital archives. Collections should identify sources clearly, preserve regional variants, and make material accessible without disregarding community rights.

Conclusion

The study and preservation of Pashto folklore is a collective undertaking. Community performers sustain the traditions, collectors document them, and scholars analyse their linguistic, literary, social, and historical significance. Professor Dawar Khan Daud, Salma Shaheen, Sirajuddin Siraj, and Makham Khattak are among the names identified in scholarship on Pashto folklore, while broader literary historians and institutions provide important supporting context.

A reliable history of this field must be built from verifiable publications, documented collections, and clear acknowledgement of contributors. By combining rigorous research with respect for oral knowledge, Pashto folklore can remain a living resource for future generations.
